If you prefer to arrange your journey independently and book flights yourself, we recommend booking directly with the airlines, as various booking portals are often less helpful in the event of cancellations, delays, etc. However, we always recommend booking both flights and accommodation together through Flamingo Tours – ensuring everything is taken care of should any unexpected delays or cancellations occur during your travels.

During daylight saving time (summer), there is no time difference between South Africa and Denmark. During standard time (winter), South Africa is one hour ahead (GMT +1). This means you can say goodbye to jet lag.

220/240 Volts. The plug sockets are different, but adapters are provided in every room at our Lamai Safari lodges.

Most people in South Africa speak English, making it an easy and welcoming travel destination. The staff at Lamai Safari Lodge also speak English, and Danish-speaking staff will often be present.

As a Danish citizen, you will automatically receive a tourist visa upon arrival in South Africa. In rare cases, you may be asked to present proof of a valid return ticket as well as sufficient financial funds for your entire stay.

Furthermore, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your return date and contain at least 2 blank pages for entry stamps.

The EU has introduced strict rules regarding the importation of food products from non-EU countries, including private imports, because animal products may carry contagious diseases that can spread to our livestock. Similarly, there are regulations regarding the movement of animal products during outbreaks of infectious animal diseases in EU countries.

The authorities place a strong emphasis on disease prevention, with increased inspections on non-commercial imports and significant fines for violations in this area.

In South Africa, the local currency is the Rand, also known as ZAR. Find the current exchange rate here

Cash can be withdrawn at the airport and in all major towns, and credit cards are widely accepted in most shops. However, it is always very practical to carry some cash for small purchases, such as souvenirs from local street vendors, or for tipping the lodge staff—though the latter can also be settled by card upon departure. Please check that your card is opened for international withdrawals. At Lamai Safari Lodge, both VISA and MASTERCARD are accepted.

In South Africa, as in many other destinations, tipping is customary. It is standard practice to tip 10–15% at restaurants. Some restaurants automatically add a 10% service charge to the final bill, which will be stated on the menu.

If you wish to tip the staff at Lamai Safari's lodges, the amount is placed in an envelope on the day of departure and handed to the manager. The tips are shared equally among all staff members, ensuring that no one is overlooked.

A good guideline is between R1,000 – R1,600 per guest per week. Tipping is entirely voluntary, but it is a heartfelt way to express your appreciation for a wonderful stay.

We always recommend wearing muted, neutral colours when embarking on a game drive or bush walk. Khaki or dark green tones are ideal, though not mandatory – you certainly do not need an entirely new wardrobe to go on safari.

During the winter months (April – October), it is advisable to bring a warm windbreaker for the morning and evening drives, as well as long trousers. As soon as the sun rises, the bush warms up, and summer attire is perfect.

In the summer months, a sun hat and a long-sleeved shirt are recommended, as the African sun can be very intense.

In addition, a pair of closed-toe shoes, such as hiking boots or trainers, is essential.

Children and safaris go together wonderfully. A safari holiday combines pure relaxation and fun by the pool with unforgettable wildlife encounters with all the animals children know from the zoo. There is no reason to hesitate travelling with children – quite the opposite.

Let them feel, see, and experience a vibrant new culture and a truly special way of holidaying. A safari is a magical adventure for children, creating precious, lifelong memories of South Africa. Children under the age of 3 cannot participate in game drives, but can instead enjoy the pool area together with a parent or another adult.

Most guests have mobile signal at our lodges; however, international roaming calls can be costly. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in all our communal areas and across many of our chalets and rooms.

Lamai Safari Lodge has its own private water supply, making the tap water safe to drink. All our guests receive a thermal water bottle on loan during their stay, which can be filled directly from the tap or from our Aqua cooler. Should you wish to purchase a thermal bottle to take home, the proceeds support Lamai Safari's community water initiative, drilling boreholes for local tribal communities.

Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa, and Gravelotte are the closest towns to our lodges, where you can explore comfortably at your own pace. Lamai Safari Lodge is approximately 50 km from Hoedspruit and about 26 km from Phalaborwa.

Both Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa offer lovely shopping opportunities, restaurants, and grocery stores. If you are searching for authentic souvenirs, Hoedspruit is especially worth a visit, and a shopping excursion to the town can easily be arranged directly at the lodge.

The nearest private hospitals are located in Hoedspruit (50 km) and Tzaneen (110 km). Additionally, there is a medical clinic in Phalaborwa, 26 km from Lamai Safari Lodge.

In the area surrounding our lodges, crime is low and you can easily explore Hoedspruit without a guide. In larger cities like Johannesburg, certain areas experience higher crime rates, and we recommend only visiting these as part of organized excursions.

When visiting predominantly local townships or neighborhoods, we advise being accompanied by a local guide. In South Africa, just as in Europe, there are areas you should only visit if you are familiar with the local culture and customs of that specific district.

At Lamai Safari Lodges, you can cool off and unwind by one of our swimming pools after an eventful day in the bush.

All swimming is at your own risk, as there are no lifeguards on duty at the pool areas. This applies to both adults and children, and children must always be supervised by an adult.

The room towels are exclusively for in-room use and must not be brought to the pool area.

If you would like a towel for the pool, you can collect a separate pool towel upon arrival. The pool towel is registered to your room and must be returned no later than your day of departure. If the towel is not returned, a fee will be charged to your account.
